2-1. Running RATS
You can run RATS in either batch mode or interactive mode.
Batch Mode
In batch mode, RATS automatically executes all of the instructions on a program file you supply, and saves the resulting output to another file. This can be very convenient for running long programs, because you can start the job and work on other things while RATS does all the work. It can also be convenient when you want to run an entire suite of programs.
Interactive Mode
In interactive mode, you work in the RATS Editor, a specialized text-editor that allows you to:
* type in and execute RATS instructions, and view the resulting output
* modify and re-execute individual instructions or sets of instructions.
* save, edit, and rerun complete RATS programs
* view, print, edit, and save output
* create, view, save, print, and export time series graphs and scatter plots
* access on-line help
We refer to this as interactive mode because it makes doing your analysis an interactive process. You can type in and execute some instructions, view the output, execute some new instructions, modify and re-run earlier instructions, and so on, without having to re-run the entire program each time. This can save you a lot of time when developing models and programs, or when you just want to do some quick analysis.
Since batch mode is fairly self-explanatory, we'll focus on interactive mode in this tour.
